Hemorrhoids suppositories

Reviewed – What Are Hemorrhoids Suppositories And Can They Help?

Suppositories are actually medications that need to be taken anally, through the vagina or the urethra, which is the opening through which urine passes. In most cases, these suppositories look like round bullets that have a binding material which melts when it comes in contact with body temperature. And once the material melts, the medication that is contained within the bullets gets mixed or dissolved within the body. If you are suffering from hemorrhoids, you could turn to one of these for relief. These hemorrhoids suppositories are to be pushed through the rectum or the anal passage and they can indeed be very effective. The name comes from the Latin word ‘suppositus’, and it refers to the way they are to be applied.

The use of these suppositories goes back a long time. Even Hippocrates, who was one of those who founded Western medicine promoted their use. He was of the opinion that the hemorrhoids need to be cut off, but once done, a cloth that has been smeared with honey needs to be inserted into the anus. Though quite crude, but this was probably the first suppository. In recent times, medical science has advanced quite a bit and so the modern day hemorrhoids suppositories are much more advanced and they are very effective too.

Why Do They Look Like Bullets?

They are shaped like a bullet because it helps in the insertion. You have to push it past your anal sphincter and thus, there should be no sharp edges naturally. Once inside, they will be gripped because of muscle action and this will make the slide further inside.

Are Suppositories For Hemorrhoids Effective?

In reality, there is a lot of debate about whether these suppositories are at all effective or not. There are those who are of the opinion that they cannot help at all when someone is suffering from external hemorrhoids. So this is not the right treatment option in these cases. These people might have a point because the suppositories have to be inserted within the rectum, and can thus be ineffective of the hemorrhoids is on the outside.

But if you are suffering from internal hemorrhoids, then these products might be able to help. However for that, they need to be pushed deep into the rectum. But most suppositories for hemorrhoids rest high in the rectum region, and can thus be ineffective.

Suppositories can however still help, particularly in bowel movement because they can help in reducing the strain. Remember, one major cause of hemorrhoids is this strain when trying to pass bowel and so anything that you do to reduce this is good news. If you already have piles, then by using suppositories, you can provide relief to the veins. However for long term results, you should change your diet and eating habits.

So the fact remains that, though the hemorrhoids suppositories might offer some remedy on the short term, but this is not the cure you should seek for a permanent remedy. Suppositories are just trying to mask the symptoms and provide temporary relief from the pain and itching. The truth is, the root causes of hemorrhoids remain. You should thus try to identify these root causes and eliminate them, and once these causes are eradicated, the symptoms will go away automatically.
